quarter. The British were driven back to the college buildings and were finally compelled to surrender. The American victory was complete. Washington and his army then marched to Kingston, and from there to the Highlands around Morris-town, where they remained the balance of the winter. The exhaustion of the troops prevented the attack on New Brunswick, and that plan was abandoned.

Some of the ablest and best officers of the American forces gave their lives for freedom during the battle of Princeton. Among these were General Hugh Mercer, who had been a comrade of Washington during the French and Indian War, Colonel Haslet, and Captains Fleming, Neil, and Shippen.
